Quick Start Guide for Beginning Band Students |

The Four Steps to Joining Band |

Ž Coming Prepared to Rehearsals is where learning takes place. Without this part of the commitment, the young musician is going nowhere. Few band instruments are provided by the school. Parents must provide instruments for their children. Ž Coming to All Performances are a part of the music experience that develops musicianship. Attendance is required, even during baseball, soccer, or other events. When you join sports, let your coach know about the concerts.
Ž Practicing: Everyday Practice 15 to 30 minutes. |

A little more Information about Practicing…. We understand when children are sick, on vacation, at camp, or at family events and are unable to practice. This is simply a part of life we understand. We do not punish, lower grades, or take any action because of these events. |

The Above are the choices for Beginning 5th grades student have. We do not offer the piano, guitar, stringed instruments (Violin, Viola, Cello, or Bass) or bass guitar. For the Concert Band, these are not instruments that are scored.
We have changed the policy on drums so that students will have the opportunity to learn to read music notation instead of just rhythms. As the year progresses, we will allow students to move towards percussion. |
We will not offer percussion during the 5th grade year until the student has completed the first quarter of band with another instrument. |
We do not offer saxophone unless by permission of the band directors. We recommend starting on the clarinet or flute prior to learning the saxophone. |
Visit your local music store and sample. Also, Band Night Students will have the opportunity to sample instruments. |
Getting Materials and Information
After your child obtains an instrument, you will need a music stand for home practice, and a matching book that is used by all of our band students, “Accent on Achievement, Book I” for the instrument you are chosen (Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, or Baritone Horn in Bass Clef).
For concerts: Students will need a white dress shirt, black pants or dress (except girls who play the Clarinet should not wear dresses), dark socks, and black shoes. We would suggest that you shop around at second hand store or other retailers.
